Please keep in mind that we try to complete our casting and hiring in March every year.

Maine is pretty far away from anywhere, and it is not always convenient to hold auditions up here at the theatre. Yet we do interview prospective employees on an individual basis. If you are ever up in this neck of the woods, please contact us to set up an appointment.

Internships

Interns are hired for the entire season, and perform a mixture of technical and performance duties. An Intern will work in either the Scene or Costume Shop, have Running Crew duties for the performances and also perform in our CHILDREN’S THEATRE PROGRAM show, which is performed twice a week during the season. There is also some casting in several of our SUBSCRIPTION SERIES shows. The INTERN positions are geared towards college level students who wish to further their training. INTERNS are paid a weekly stipend.

Housing

Housing is provided. We rent two company houses each year for our employees, located in the town of Bar Harbor, 8 miles from the theatre. Each of the two facilities is completely furnished and within walking distance to shops, restaurants and other amenities. (We do ask that Company Members bring their own sheets, blankets and towels.) Personal transportation is not required, but is a plus. This is a pretty rural area, and there is little public transport. The Island Explorer Bus Service runs regularly throughout the Island, but not late at night after performances.

Terms of Employment

All Employees are hired under a contractual agreement. Each Employee Contract will state specific duties and Casting. With the exception of the Children’s Theatre Show, all roles are cast in advance and specifically stipulated in the Contractual Agreement.

We prefer to hire company members for the entire season as ART works as a “resident company.” We strongly believe in the strength of ensemble work.

The length of the season traditionally goes from mid-June to Labor Day. The starting dates for next season have not yet been determined.

All ART employees are covered by Worker’s Compensation.

Transportation costs are NOT paid by ART.

THE ACADIA REP IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

What to Expect

The Acadia Repertory Theatre is located in Somesville on Mount Desert Island, Maine, performing in the rustic Masonic Hall which is converted each summer into a 148 seat, intimate performance space. ART has presented over 300 productions and employed over 750 performers, directors, designers, and technicians, building a a strong audience base of both local residents and summer visitors over decades of performances.

The best description of the theatre is “low-tech,” from our small stage to the 12-channel dimmers rack. Yet the performance space, with its raw wood interior, is the epitome of summer stock, and the intimacy best represents who we are and the kind of work we do. Specifics, not spectacle, are our stock in trade. The rehearsal hall, scene shop, and dressing rooms are all on premises. Our costume shop and property storage facility is at our winter office in Southwest Harbor. At the end of the season, all of our equipment is struck, stored and secured, and the building reverts back to the Masonic Order for their use. They have been excellent landlords over the years, and we work to maintain this good relationship.
